Located at 72 Ngõ Văn Chương the temple’s current form dates back to the 19th century. Before that it stood as a simple structure honoring the God of Literature. Local tradition however weaves a far more intricate tale. The temple is said to be the location where Nam Phương Xích Đế a powerful figure in Vietnamese folklore was deified. Nam Phương Xích Đế or Đế Chế also known as Chu Từ or simply Đào Công was a legendary hero. He lived during the reign of King Hùng Vương the 18th. Đào Công was a brilliant strategist and a brave warrior. He led the army to victory against Sơn Tinh a powerful mountain spirit who threatened the kingdom. His heroism led to his deification.
After his death people built a small shrine to honor Đào Công. It marked the place where he supposedly ascended to heaven becoming a God. This small shrine was the ancestor of the current Đền Văn Chương. The temple’s name Văn Chương Temple translates to Literature Temple.
