Đền Kim Ngưu

Whispers of ancient legends surround Đền Kim Ngưu, the Temple of the Golden Buffalo. Here, beside the shimmering waters of West Lake, a mystical tale unfolds. Đền Kim Ngưu stands as a testament to a time when mythical creatures roamed the land. The story begins in the 11th century during the Lý Dynasty. A renowned physician named Khổng Lộ was summoned to the distant land of the Song Dynasty to heal the Emperor’s ailing child. Upon the child’s recovery, the grateful Emperor granted Khổng Lộ a reward of his choosing. Instead of riches, Khổng Lộ requested a quantity of black bronze to cast a bell. Back in his homeland, the bell was forged. Its resonant tones reached the ears of the Emperor’s Golden Buffalo, a magical creature drawn to the allure of the “metallic call.” The buffalo bolted, carving a path that transformed the landscape. Its hooves dug deep into the earth, creating the very lake beside which Đền Kim Ngưu now stands. Khổng Lộ, realizing the chaos he had unleashed, cast the bell into the newly formed lake to silence its magical call. The Golden Buffalo, pacified, settled beneath the waters. Đền Kim Ngưu was then erected to honor this mythical beast. Though destroyed in 1947, the temple was rebuilt in 2000, preserving the legend of the Golden Buffalo. Inside, 32 decrees from the Lê to Nguyễn dynasties honoring the Golden Buffalo are kept. Outside, a magnificent banyan tree, over 100 years old, stands sentinel.
