“A humble shrine amidst the urban sprawl”. That’s how I would describe Đền Hàng Cá. Today we will explore this unique temple. It stands as a testament to Hanoi’s layered past. Đền Hàng Cá offers a glimpse into the city’s cultural and historical tapestry.
Đền Hàng Cá is located at 27 Hàng Cá Street. This places it in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. This temple is more than just a religious site. It is a living link to the area’s history. This area was once Đồng Thuận village.
Before 1889 the area was a hub for fishmongers. The Tô River flowed nearby. This made Hàng Cá Street a prime location for selling fresh fish. It was known as trại Tiên Ngư meaning fresh fish. Today the river is gone. Yet, Đền Hàng Cá remains. It stands as a reminder of the street’s origins.
Đền Hàng Cá is dedicated to Lý Tiến. Lý Tiến was a legendary figure. He fought against foreign invaders. He lived during the reign of the 6th Hùng Vương. Lý Tiến was wounded in battle and returned home to die. His house became a tomb. A temple was erected beside it. This became Đền Hàng Cá.
Interestingly the Đền Hàng Cá we see today is only part of the original structure. French urban planning in 1889 reshaped the area. This resulted in the temple’s reduction. What remains is the hậu cung the rear sanctuary. Despite its smaller size Đền Hàng Cá maintains its spiritual significance.
Lý Tiến is also venerated at Đền Ngũ Giáp. It is located at 54 Hàng Cót Street. This shows the widespread respect for this folk hero. It shows his importance to the local community.
The name Hàng Cá itself has an interesting history. During French rule the street was called Rue de la Poissonnerie. This translates to Fishmonger Street. In 1945 the Vietnamese name Hàng Cá was restored. The name Hàng Cá has been preserved since then.
Today Hàng Cá Street has changed. The fish vendors are gone. The street is now lined with various shops. Yet, Đền Hàng Cá remains. It stands as a reminder of the street’s past.
Đền Hàng Cá connects us to Hanoi’s past. It honors a local hero. It reflects the changes the city has undergone. Take a moment to appreciate this small temple. Consider its role in Hanoi’s rich history. It serves as a reminder that even in the busiest city corners ancient stories reside.
