This memorial located at the Hauptfriedhof remembers Frankfurt residents. They were killed or went missing in World War I and World War II. The central structure the Ehrenmal was built in 1928. It originally honored those lost in World War I. However after 1957 it also remembered the victims of World War II. Additions were made to the facade and an Iron Cross was placed above the entrance.
More than 3000 people from World War II are buried here. Most were civilians killed in air raids. Around 400 soldiers from the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS are also buried here. Soldiers executed by the Wehrmacht justice system in Frankfurt-Preungesheim were moved here in 1964. Their graves are marked with red grave markers of various shapes. A contrast to the uniform grey crosses for World War I victims.
