Deep within the heart of Hanoi, nestled in the La Khê neighborhood, lies Đền Bia Bà. It’s a place of quiet reverence, a sanctuary dedicated to Trần Thị Hiền. She was the royal concubine of King Mạc Thái Tông. Đền Bia Bà isn’t just a temple. It’s a bridge between the spiritual and the everyday. The locals call it the “Ba Chua Kho” of Hanoi, a place to seek blessings for prosperity and luck, especially in business.

Đền Bia Bà is more than just a place to pray for good fortune. It’s part of a larger spiritual landscape, the La Khê spiritual complex. This includes a temple, a communal house, and a stele. These are dedicated to two village guardian deities, Hắc Diện Đại Vương and Thiên Tiên Báo Hoa. They, along with Trần Thị Hiền, watch over the community. They ensure good harvests and protect the weaving village.

The story of Trần Thị Hiền and Đền Bia Bà is woven into the fabric of Vietnamese history. She was the daughter of Trần Chân, a high-ranking official during the Later Lê dynasty. She entered King Mạc Thái Tông’s court at the young age of 16. Though her marriage was arranged, historical records suggest a deep respect between her and the king. The king praised her for her intelligence and administrative skills.

Tragically, Trần Thị Hiền died young, at 28, during childbirth. The king mourned her deeply, praising her virtues in the stele that now stands at Đền Bia Bà. He highlighted her efficiency in managing palace affairs. He even compared her favorably to exemplary figures from the Confucian classics. The king’s grief and admiration are palpable in the inscription. It serves as a testament to her profound impact on his life and the kingdom. He marvels at her abilities, lamenting her untimely death.

Over the centuries, Đền Bia Bà has become a focal point for the community. It’s a place where the spirit of Trần Thị Hiền lives on. She is revered for her intelligence, compassion, and contributions to the kingdom. The temple is a testament to a remarkable woman. Her life, though short, left an enduring legacy. She continues to inspire those who visit Đền Bia Bà seeking blessings and guidance.
