Could a church truly offer deliverance? This question weighed heavily on the minds of many Rwandans after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Right here, at Deliverance Church in Kigali, that question has been explored and answered for many. Deliverance Church offered solace and spiritual renewal in the wake of unimaginable devastation. The church became a beacon of hope for survivors who felt abandoned by traditional religious institutions. In June 2024, Deliverance Church organized a poignant tribute to the victims of the genocide. Members, many of them young people, visited the Nyanza Genocide Memorial in Kicukiro. They laid wreaths on the mass graves and held a service at the church. Bishop Rose Karasanyi, senior pastor of Deliverance Church, emphasized the importance of educating young people about Rwanda’s history. She stressed the need for them to understand the truth about the genocide. This understanding is crucial to combating genocide denial and ideology. Line Rusekampunzi, president of Ibuka in Kicukiro, praised the church’s efforts. He acknowledged the role of churches in instilling positive values in young people. Deliverance Church’s commitment to remembrance and reconciliation is a testament to its dedication to healing the nation. It serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, faith can offer deliverance and hope. The church stands as a symbol of resilience, a place where the community gathers to remember, to heal, and to build a brighter future.
