Ensconced in the embrace of Tianshou Mountain rests Deling Tomb. It stands as a testament to imperial China’s grandeur. Today we explore this captivating mausoleum. Deling Tomb is one of the thirteen Ming Tombs near Beijing. These tombs collectively house the remains of thirteen emperors of the Ming Dynasty.

Did you know that the Ming Tombs are the largest imperial tomb complex in China? It is also the world. This sprawling site covers 40 square kilometers. Construction began in 1409. It represents a history spanning over 300 to 600 years. The tombs earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003. They stand as one of China’s best-preserved imperial tomb complexes.

Deling Tomb holds the remains of Emperor Xizong. He was one of the thirteen Ming emperors interred here. The location of the Ming Tombs was carefully chosen. Feng Shui principles guided the selection. The arc-shaped valley at the foot of the Jundu Mountains was deemed ideal. It would deflect bad spirits descending from the North. This created a necropolis of tranquility.

Imagine the scene during the Ming Dynasty. Commoners were forbidden from entering the tomb area. However, in 1644, Li Zicheng’s army ransacked and burned many of the tombs. Later, in 1725, the Yongzheng Emperor bestowed a hereditary title on a Ming descendant. His duty was to perform rituals at the Ming Tombs.

As we stand before Deling Tomb, consider the words of British historian Joseph Needham. He praised the Ming Tombs as an architectural achievement. He believed the layout integrated architecture and landscape art. American urban planner Edmund N. Bacon admired the tombs’ magnificent layout. He said they utilized the entire valley space to commemorate the deceased monarchs.

The Spirit Way leads into the complex. It is a 7-kilometer road lined with statues of guardian animals and officials. A large stone memorial archway marks the entrance. The Shengong Shengde Stele Pavilion houses a 50-ton stone statue. It carries a memorial tablet.
