Seven times Delhi rose and fell. Seven cities built destroyed and rebuilt. That’s the legend. A legend woven into the very fabric of this incredible place. We stand today in the heart of Old Delhi. Imagine the echoes of centuries past. Feel the weight of history under your feet.

Delhi’s story begins long before recorded history. Legend speaks of Indraprastha a city from around 1400 BCE. It was the capital of the Pandavas heroes from the Mahabharata. While no trace of Indraprastha remains its legacy lives on. The name Delhi itself likely derives from Raja Dhilu a king who ruled here in the first century BCE. His name corrupted over time became Delhi Dehli Dilli Dhilli. Many names for one magnificent city.

Throughout history mighty empires battled for control of Delhi. The Tomaras built Lal Kot. The Chauhans expanded it into Qila Rai Pithora. The Delhi Sultanate a series of dynasties ruled for centuries. They built impressive structures including the Qutub Minar a symbol of Delhi’s power and a testament to the builders’ skill. The Qutb complex houses the earliest extant mosque in India. It was built from the stones of twenty-seven Jain temples. A sobering reminder of the cost of conquest.

Then came the Mughals. They built the majestic Red Fort and the sprawling Jama Masjid. Shah Jahan’s Shahjahanabad the seventh city of Delhi. The magnificent Red Fort housed Mughal emperors for almost two hundred years. The Jama Masjid one of India’s largest mosques. These architectural wonders speak of the Mughals’ wealth and artistry.

The Mughal era ended in turmoil. The city suffered invasions and sackings. Nader Shah’s invasion in 1739 left Delhi devastated. The Marathas briefly ruled followed by the Sikhs. Finally the British East India Company took control in 1803.

The 1857 rebellion sought to end British rule. It temporarily restored the Mughal emperor to power. But Delhi fell to the British again. The last Mughal emperor was exiled.

The British decided to move their capital from Calcutta to Delhi. New Delhi a planned city was constructed. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed its broad avenues and green spaces. It contrasted sharply with the narrow streets of Old Delhi. This is where you are standing at this very moment. A blend of old and new a city constantly reinventing itself.

After India’s independence in 1947 Delhi became the capital of a free nation. It has grown rapidly absorbing millions of immigrants. The modern skyline mixes with ancient monuments. Delhi is a city of contrasts a city where history and modernity meet and mingle. A city of legends and realities. A city of stories that continue to unfold. A city you will never forget.
