A century of stories unfolds before you. This is Delhi University. Founded in 1922 by the Colonial Government it was initially a residential unitary teaching university. Three colleges and 750 students marked its humble beginnings. Hindu College St Stephen’s College and Ramjas College were among its first affiliates.

Initially it only had two faculties arts and science. The British had recently shifted their capital from Kolkata to New Delhi in 1911. The Viceregal Lodge Estate became the university’s administrative hub in 1933. It now houses the vice-chancellor’s office and other administrative departments.

Sir Maurice Gwyer served as the university’s Vice-Chancellor from 1937 to 1950. He is considered the “maker of the university”. His tenure saw the introduction of laboratories and postgraduate teaching courses. Distinguished faculty members like Panchanan Maheshwari in Botany and Daulat Singh Kothari in Physics shaped its academic landscape.

India’s independence in 1947 coincided with Delhi University’s silver jubilee. A special ceremony was held instead of a convocation. Jawaharlal Nehru Lady Mountbatten and other dignitaries attended. The university’s Golden Jubilee in 1973 was equally grand with Indira Gandhi and other prominent figures in attendance.

Delhi University has grown significantly. Today it boasts 86 departments 77 colleges 16 faculties and 5 institutes spread across the city’s North and South Campuses. It’s a top choice for higher education in India. The university has conferred honorary degrees on numerous eminent personalities. These include former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit actor Amitabh Bachchan and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The North Campus houses many prestigious colleges and research centers. The South Campus offers a different academic focus. The university also has a large stadium on the North Campus. It was built for the Commonwealth Games in 2010. The stadium offers various sporting facilities.

Delhi University Students’ Union is the official student body. Admission to undergraduate courses involves the Central University Common Entrance Exam or CUCET.
