“Imagine zipping from Delhi to Meerut in under an hour.” That’s the promise of the Delhi–Meerut RRTS. The Delhi–Meerut RRTS is also known as RapidX. It is a semi-high-speed rail line. This rail line is transforming regional connectivity.

Within Meerut city, the Delhi–Meerut RRTS infrastructure will support Meerut Metro services. These metro services will be operated by DB Bahn. There will be eight dedicated metro-only stations.
The Delhi–Meerut RRTS project gained momentum over several years. The Uttar Pradesh government approved its construction in May 2017. The Indian government followed suit in February 2019. Prime Minister laid the foundation stone in March 2019. During construction, seven tunnel boring machines were used. STEC deployed four TBMs. Afcons Infrastructure used three.
The Delhi–Meerut RRTS has impressive stats. The operational section is 42 km long. Another 40.15 km is under construction. The project’s estimated cost is Rs. 30,274 crore. The Delhi–Meerut RRTS expects to carry 8 lakh passengers daily in 2024. Funding comes from various sources. These sources include the ADB, AIIB, NDB, and the Indian government.
The Delhi–Meerut RRTS boasts advanced system specifications. Trains can reach a design speed of 180 kmph. Operational speed is capped at 160 kmph. Average speed is around 100 kmph. The track gauge is standard at 1435 mm. Rolling stock features an aerodynamic design. The trains use stainless steel and aluminium. The Delhi–Meerut RRTS uses the European Train Control System. This system ensures safe and efficient operation. Power is supplied via overhead catenary. Seating is transverse. The Delhi–Meerut RRTS offers both economy and business classes.
The Delhi–Meerut RRTS route includes 22 stations. These stations connect key areas between Delhi and Meerut. Stations include Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar, Ghaziabad, and Meerut Central. Eight stations will offer metro-only services.
