Wow. Delgado Playground isn’t just a playground. It’s a piece of New Orleans history. Right here on this very spot stood the original Delgado Central Trades School.

Imagine 1921. Thirteen hundred boys filled these grounds. They learned trades. They built a future. The school was the brainchild of Isaac Delgado. A wealthy businessman and philanthropist. He left a fortune. This amazing school was the result. It was built with funds from his will. It was built right here adjacent to City Park. The original building was on City Park Avenue.

Delgado wasn’t always a success story. The Great Depression hit hard. Funding dried up. World War II brought a revival. The need for skilled workers boosted Delgado. Then financial trouble struck again in the 1950s. But Delgado adapted. It became a technical institute then a community college. The school expanded. It even moved its administration building in 1982.

Today Delgado Community College is huge. It has seven locations. It’s Louisiana’s oldest and largest community college. Delgado’s story is one of resilience and growth. Its impact on New Orleans is undeniable. The original Delgado Central Trades School stood right here. Think of the thousands of students who passed through this very place. Think of the skills they learned. Think of the lives they built. This small plot of land holds a rich history. It is a testament to the vision of one man and the enduring spirit of New Orleans. This is more than a playground. It’s a legacy.
