Gazing up at the Defensionskaserne, have you ever wondered about the lives it has sheltered? This colossal structure, the largest on Erfurt’s Petersberg, has witnessed centuries of history. The Defensionskaserne began its life between 1828 and 1831. It was built on the ruins of the St. Peter and Paul Benedictine monastery, destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars. The Kingdom of Prussia, newly in control of Erfurt, envisioned the Defensionskaserne as a key element in the city’s fortifications. Imagine, 500 soldiers billeted within these walls, their lives echoing within the massive structure. The Defensionskaserne was more than just barracks. It was designed as a “fortress within a fortress,” intended to divide the Petersberg citadel into two independent sections. Its thick walls, some over two meters wide, and rows of loopholes in the basement speak to its defensive purpose. The Defensionskaserne’s location also served a tactical function. It blocked views of the upper plateau from the north, further bolstering the citadel’s defenses. The building’s architecture, Prussian Classicism, reflects the military ethos of the time. Three large arched portals punctuate the facade facing the former parade ground. Corner projections, made of sandstone blocks, reinforce the building’s formidable appearance. After the unification of Germany in 1871, the Defensionskaserne’s military significance diminished with the advent of new weaponry. It was repurposed as a storage facility and continued to house soldiers. A significant transformation took place in 1912-1913. The original flat, earth-covered roof was replaced with the impressive mansard roof we see today, increasing the capacity to 750 soldiers. This architectural addition dramatically altered Erfurt’s skyline. The Defensionskaserne, along with St. Peter’s Church and the Erfurt Cathedral, became part of the city’s iconic “crown.” The Defensionskaserne continued to serve various purposes throughout the 20th century. It housed police, Freikorps units, and even served as a transit camp for displaced persons during and after World War II. After standing empty for a period, the Defensionskaserne is currently undergoing renovations. It is being transformed into a vibrant hub for creative industries, gastronomy, culture, and media, set to open in 2025. The Defensionskaserne stands as a testament to Erfurt’s rich and layered history.
