The Deep Sea Drilling Project or DSDP began in 1966. The University of California San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography managed it. Global Marine Inc. handled the actual drilling. The project’s ship D/V Glomar Challenger was launched in 1968. It marked the beginning of a new era in ocean exploration.
The Glomar Challenger’s success came quickly. On Leg 1 Site 2 the crew found salt domes under 1067 meters of water. This discovery hinted at oil beneath the ocean floor. Oil companies got samples and the potential for commercial development arose.
The ship’s main goal was scientific exploration. Leg 3 brought one of the most important finds. Drilling at 10 sites along an oceanic ridge between South America and Africa revealed proof of continental drift. This discovery supported Alfred Wegener’s theory of a single ancient landmass named Pangaea. It also strengthened the plate tectonics theory.
Scientists learned that the ocean floor is relatively young. It is about 200 million years old compared to Earth’s 4.5 billion years. The seafloor renews itself at rift zones and descends under tectonic plates. It also rises to form mountain ranges.
Other countries joined the project in 1975. The Deep Sea Drilling Project became the International Phase of Ocean Drilling or IPOD. Germany Japan the United Kingdom the Soviet Union and France all participated.
The Glomar Challenger stopped working with the DSDP in 1983. Some of its parts are now at the Smithsonian Institution. A new ship the JOIDES Resolution replaced it in 1985. The Ocean Drilling Program or ODP continued until 2003. Then the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program or IODP took over.
The Deep Sea Drilling Project achieved impressive results. The Glomar Challenger penetrated 325548 meters below the seafloor. It cored 170043 meters and recovered 97056 meters of core. The ship investigated 624 sites during 96 expeditions. It reached a maximum water depth of 7044 meters. It traveled 375632 nautical miles.
