What if I told you that the whispers of kings and the echoes of a grand, unrealized dream linger just beyond the gentle rush of water? Here, before the Dècima Esclusa del Real Canal de Manzanares, the tenth and final lock, the ghost of a navigable Manzanares River still flows. The Dècima Esclusa stands as a testament to a vision born in the 16th century. King Philip II, fueled by ambition and the whispers of engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli, dreamt of connecting Madrid to Lisbon via a network of waterways. The Manzanares, the Jarama, the Tagus—all would unite, transforming landlocked Madrid into a bustling port city.

The Dècima Esclusa, built around 1825 under King Ferdinand VII, marks the furthest point the canal was ever navigable. Imagine elegant barges gliding along the waters, carrying goods and perhaps even royalty. The canal, however, was a costly endeavor, plagued by landowner opposition and funding issues. Even when sections were completed, like the stretch from the Puente de Toledo to the eighth lock at Cañada Real Galiana under Charles III, the dream of a fully navigable river remained elusive. The Dècima Esclusa and its sister, the Novena Esclusa, were built with an elegance that reflects Ferdinand VII’s vision. The exceptional quality of their construction, using a mix of solid brick and limestone reinforcements, is still evident today, particularly in the remarkably preserved top layer of limestone blocks at the Dècima Esclusa.

Sadly, the arrival of the railway in 1851 rendered the canal obsolete. The dream faded, and the waters of the Dècima Esclusa grew still. The lock keeper’s house, once a symbol of the canal’s activity, fell into ruin, serving as a livestock stable before its eventual demise. Yet, traces of its past remain, like the wharf along the right side of the lock, a silent reminder of bustling activity. Even the extension of the canal beyond the Dècima Esclusa, towards Rivas, met a similar fate, losing water to the river and never fulfilling its intended purpose. The “Casas del Canal,” located a few hundred meters beyond, likely served industrial purposes, their presence hinting at the canal’s potential even in its declining years. The Dècima Esclusa del Real Canal de Manzanares stands before you, a poignant blend of ambition and abandonment. Its robust structure, the carefully engineered lock, the echoes of a dream—all whisper tales of a Madrid that might have been, a city connected to the world by the gentle flow of the Manzanares.
