“A city within a city,” they used to say about Dearborn Heights. Dearborn Heights. A place carved from pieces of Dearborn Township and a sliver of Inkster. Dearborn Heights officially came into being in 1960. But its roots run deeper, entwined with the story of Detroit’s suburban expansion. Dearborn Heights has always been a place where people came to build their lives, to raise families. It’s known for its strong schools and close-knit neighborhoods. A “bedroom community” they called it. A place where people found affordable housing and a sense of community. Dearborn Heights boasts a diverse population. In 2010, the majority of residents were White, comprising 86.1% of the population. African Americans made up 7.9% of the community, with smaller percentages of Native Americans, Asians, and other races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race represented 4.7% of Dearborn Heights’ residents. The city offers a wide range of services and amenities. Excellent schools, nearby colleges and universities, and modern healthcare facilities. Numerous houses of worship and civic organizations dot the landscape, reflecting the community’s diverse values. Dearborn Heights also offers a variety of shopping areas.
