How about diving into a place where history whispers and arches soar? We are standing before the First Congregational Church of Detroit. This church is not just a building. It is a testament to Detroit’s vibrant past and unwavering spirit.

Established on Christmas Day in 1844 the First Congregational Church has deep roots. Initially, the first two church buildings resided near the Detroit River. The third and current building was erected in 1891.

John Lyman Faxon designed this architectural masterpiece. Albert Kahn added the Angel’s Wing in 1921. This blend of Romanesque and Byzantine styles makes it a unique landmark.

Notice the warm red limestone. The Woodward facade features a five-bay loggia. Above it rounded windows showcase intricate tracery. The 120-foot campanile catches the eye. The copper figure of Archangel Uriel crowns the structure.

The First Congregational Church’s architecture draws inspiration from Venice and Ravenna. The sanctuary mirrors the lower church of St. Francis of Assisi. Carved wood ceiling portraits and rose windows adorn the interior. Lyle Durgin designed the interior murals completed in December 1891.

But the First Congregational Church is more than just a pretty face. It played a vital role in the Underground Railroad. The basement of the second church building hid refugees. They were en route to freedom via boats on the Detroit River.

The First Congregational Church offers exhibits about its history and architecture. Self-guided tours invite exploration of the historic facilities. The Underground Railroad Living Museum resides in the Angel’s Wing Community House. This museum simulates the journey from enslavement to freedom. It showcases Detroit’s role in the Underground Railroad.

Albert Kahn designed the Angel’s Wing Community House. It features a lounge dining room gymnasium and classrooms. The First Congregational Church extends its hospitality to the community. It hosts weddings funerals meetings and events.

The sanctuary organ deserves special mention. Casavant Freres of Quebec built this grand instrument in 1918. It is divided into two organs. One serves the gallery. The other serves the chancel.

The campanile is topped by an 8-foot copper figure of the Archangel Uriel. Uriel symbolizes light. The campanile door echoes the Cathedral of Pisa in Italy.

In 2017, a sandstone column supporting the bell tower collapsed. New sandstone columns now support the tower. These match the original stone.

The First Congregational Church is a living testament to faith community and architectural beauty. It stands as a beacon of hope in the heart of Detroit. A place where history and artistry intertwine. It enriches the lives of all who enter its doors.
