“Did you know that statues in Madrid whisper tales of forgotten monarchs and artistic dreams? Today we focus on De Madrid Sculpture. It’s not just stone or bronze. It is a portal to the past.

In the mid-18th century, Friar Martín Sarmiento got a big job. He had to decorate the Royal Palace of Madrid. His idea? Statues of all the Spanish monarchs. They would line the palace’s upper parts.

Imagine 114 limestone statues. They showed kings from the Visigoths to Philip V. There were rulers from Asturias, León, Castilla and Aragón. Even Aztec and Inca emperors were planned. Giovanni Domérico Olivieri and Felipe de Castro led the sculpting from 1743 to 1748.

But, there was a problem. Queen Isabel de Farnese, Philip V’s wife, had a nightmare. An earthquake made the statues fall. They crushed her. Superstitious, she saw it as a bad omen. She begged her son, Charles III, to remove them. Most statues never even made it to their spots. They were stuck in the palace basement.

Then, in 1842, Queen Isabel II decided to give the statues another chance. They were fixed up and moved around Madrid. Many went to Plaza de Oriente and Sabatini Gardens. Others found homes in Retiro Park. Some even left Madrid for cities like Aranjuez and Toledo. Late in the 20th century, some returned to the palace cornices.

Think about the weight of 114 limestone figures. It could have damaged the palace. Queen Isabel’s dream might have saved more than just her.

Now, when you see De Madrid Sculpture, remember this story. It is a story of ambition, fear and second chances. The statues are silent witnesses to Madrid’s vibrant history. They connect us to the dreams and anxieties of those who came before.

So, next time you wander through Madrid, look closely. These statues aren’t just decorations. They are survivors. They carry the weight of a kingdom and the dreams of a queen. They are De Madrid Sculpture and they are waiting to share their secrets with you.”
