Is it possible that such a place of peace exists amid a fishing community? De La Salle Church stands as a testament to faith. It has been a beacon of hope in Mutwal for over a century.

De La Salle Church is more than a building. It is a sanctuary for the less privileged. The church provides inspiration to all.

Let’s step back in time to 1905. Imagine the humble beginnings of De La Salle Church. It opened its doors on February 1st with just 22 boys. The goal was simple. The church wanted to give the boys of the Mutwal mission a chance to receive an elementary English education. It became the first English school in this part of Colombo North.

Initially, classes were held in cadjan sheds and old horse stables. But the church has grown. Now, it boasts a collection of solid buildings. One section even edges towards the cliff. It overlooks the vast Indian Ocean.

The De La Salle Brothers founded this church. They continue to guide its mission. They strive to build a just society through education. Their core belief is rooted in love. They want all to live with love.

These brothers were inspired by their founder. He promised that those who teach justice shall shine like stars forever. Over the years, many educators have graced De La Salle Church. Both De La Salle Brothers and secular teachers have imparted moral and values-based education. They taught essential skills. They helped ensure a brighter future. Character formation was key. The church wanted to mold responsible citizens. They needed to be trustworthy and productive.

De La Salle Church has faced local challenges. Space was limited. Financial support was scarce. Poverty was widespread in the locality. Government changes in Sri Lanka added to the difficulties.

Yet, De La Salle Church persevered. It upheld the best traditions of Catholic education. The church brought education to struggling families. It has uplifted the rising generation both culturally and religiously. Alumni have entered various fields in the Church and the State.

In 2005, De La Salle Church marked its centenary. The celebration was called De La Salle Siyawasa. The tsunami struck Sri Lanka. The celebrations were put on hold.

The Mutwal Mattakuliya beach area suffered greatly. Over 600 people from 144 families sought shelter at De La Salle Church. For over three weeks, the church provided refuge. The buildings and furniture suffered damage. Over 200 students were victims of the tsunami. The church has assisted them in countless ways.

De La Salle Church continues its mission. It helps students and their families rebuild their lives. The church hopes to yield even more abundant fruits. It wants to glorify God. It also strives to improve the welfare of Sri Lanka’s citizens.

As you stand here, remember the legacy of De La Salle Church. It is a place where love and education intertwine. The church creates a brighter future for all.
