Remember the days of East Germany? The DDR-Museum brings them back to life. It’s not just a collection of artifacts. It’s a hands-on journey into a world that once was.
The DDR-Museum sits in the former governmental district of East Germany. It is right on the River Spree, opposite the Berlin Cathedral. It is the 11th most visited museum in Berlin.

Try on DDR clothes in a recreated tower block apartment. Change TV channels. Use an original typewriter. The museum has three themed areas. They are Public Life, State and Ideology, and Life in a Tower Block. Each theme explores the positives and negatives of the DDR. There are 35 modules. These illustrate themes like media, culture, family, and the Stasi.
Imagine living under constant surveillance. A covert listening device gives you that feeling. Sit in a Trabant. Pretend to drive. A simulator shows a typical East German housing development. Exhibits cover education, work, the marketplace, and the excesses of the leadership. It’s all there at the DDR-Museum.
The DDR Museum is not state-funded. It opened on July 15, 2006. Peter Kenzelmann, an ethnologist, brought the project to life. He had searched for a museum about the DDR in Berlin. When he found none, he decided to create one.
In 2008, the DDR Museum was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award. By 2015, it had welcomed 4 million visitors.
See a recreated WBS 70 tower block flat. It has five rooms. Check out the cinema and the prison cell. Experience the surveillance room and the interrogation room. Don’t miss the nursery.
Special exhibits include a Trabant car with a driving simulation. There is also a motion-ride elevator. Look for the Volvo limousine from the ministerial car pool. Admire the mural Praise of Communism by Ronald Paris.
The exhibition focuses on the overall atmosphere, emotions, and reflections conveyed. The DDR Museum collection contains over 250000 objects.
The visitor enters the first part of the exhibition via an entrance platform. Discover an estate of prefabricated buildings on a scale of 1:20. In the second part, experience the semicircle of power. The Party is the center of everything. Open doors, hatches, and drawers. Gain detailed insights behind the facade of the socialist dictatorship. In the third part, a furnished Plattenbau apartment shows private life in the GDR. Explore a children’s room, a bedroom, a living room, and a kitchen. A bathroom, a Stasi control room, and a garage can also be experienced freely.
The DDR Museum offers a hands-on experience of everyday life in the GDR. Explore housing, work, leisure, fashion, and culture. Over 300 former GDR citizens contributed to the collection. See an Erika typewriter, a Karat Schrankwand, and a Stern radio. Photographs and clothing bring you face to face with day-to-day reality behind the Iron Curtain.
The museum doesn’t simply cater for Ostalgie fans. It sees itself as a column in the social analysis and cultural preservation of the former DDR.
The DDR Museum provides an excellent look into daily life in a Soviet satellite state. It was cut off from the outside world for over fifty years. It’s an immersive experience you won’t forget.
