Here stands Panggung Bandaraya DBKL. What stories do its walls hold?

Panggung Bandaraya DBKL is also known as DBKL City Theatre. This historical theatre hall sits across from Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur. It stands at the junction of Jalan Tun Perak and Jalan Raja. Its construction began in 1896. It was fully completed in 1904.

The DBKL City Theatre occupies the historic Old City Hall of Kuala Lumpur. Arthur Benison Hubback designed the theatre. He was a colonial government architect. He also designed the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. The Jamek Mosque is another of his creations. He designed many colonial structures throughout the Klang Valley.

Originally, it was built for plays and musicals. The Panggung Bandaraya is gazetted as a heritage building. This falls under the Antiquities Act. Its Moorish façade has been preserved.

In 1992, a major fire destroyed the theatre’s interior. City Hall’s designers and builders restored it quickly. The refurbishment included significant modifications. Furnishings were updated. The sound system was also updated.

Panggung Bandaraya is accessible. It is a short walk northwest of Masjid Jamek LRT Station.

Panggung Bandaraya was once a prestigious stage. It showcased great performances from home and abroad. Important figures often attended. Sometimes, performances were free to the public. Sadly, the theatre is rarely used for events these days. Newer halls are bigger. They have more modern facilities.

Imagine the echoes of past performances. Picture actors reciting lines. Feel the energy of the audience. The DBKL City Theatre stands as a reminder of Kuala Lumpur’s history. It is a testament to its cultural heritage. Its preserved façade whispers tales of a bygone era. It connects us to the past. It inspires us to preserve our heritage.
