Right here in Essen, before the imposing structure of DB Schenker, a story of global logistics unfolds. DB Schenker’s journey began long before this building existed. It evolved into a key division of Deutsche Bahn. Deutsche Bahn acquired Schenker-Stinnes in 2002. This acquisition marked a significant expansion into international logistics.
Why did Deutsche Bahn acquire international logistics companies? It was due to customer demand. Analysis in 2000 showed large customers shipped much freight abroad. Since their core business was Germany, they risked losing customers. These customers needed international services. There wasn’t enough time for organic growth. The acquisition of Stinnes AG and Schenker was the answer.
Since 2007, DB Schenker has been Deutsche Bahn’s freight logistics arm. It brought together all of Deutsche Bahn’s transport activities except rail cargo. With over 72,000 employees across 2,000 locations in 140 countries. DB Schenker is a global giant.
Now, let’s look at this very location. Before “THE GRID” was built, DB Schenker’s Essen operations were scattered. They occupied eight different business premises across the city. Imagine the logistical challenges. Coordinating teams spread across multiple locations was difficult. Communication suffered. Efficiency was compromised.
In 2016, all changed when DB Schenker moved into its new Essen headquarters. “THE GRID,” as it is known, consolidated operations under one roof. Project developers KÖLBL KRUSE and lessor WealthCap handed over the keys. The new building is located next to Essen central train station. This strategic location improves connectivity. It streamlines operations. The building can accommodate 730 employees. The number is expected to rise to 900.
The inauguration was a major event. Michael Groschek, Minister of Building, Housing, Urban Development and Transport, attended. Dr. Rüdiger Grube, Chairman of Deutsche Bahn, was present. Essen’s Mayor, Thomas Kufen, also attended. Jochen Thewes, Chairman of Schenker AG, spoke about the benefits of the new headquarters.
“THE GRID” isn’t just an office building. It symbolizes DB Schenker’s commitment to Essen. It signifies confidence in North Rhine-Westphalia as a logistics hub. The building’s design promotes communication. An “Open Space” philosophy encourages interaction. Transparency fosters collaboration.
DB Schenker manages complex supply chains for global firms. These include Apple, Procter & Gamble, Dell, ASML and BMW. It once operated rail freight business under the DB Schenker Rail brand. Now it operates as DB Cargo.
DB Schenker has also faced controversies. These include a bribery conviction in Russia. There were also accusations of unfair pricing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, DB Schenker continues to evolve.
In 2021, DB Schenker partnered with Volocopter to develop heavy-lift drones. They also launched Schenker Ventures. This venture capital arm invests in logistics innovation.
In late 2024, DSV agreed to purchase DB Schenker for €14.3 billion. This acquisition will create a global logistics giant.
