The Dawson Massacre Plaque. It might be inconspicuous at first glance, but the stories etched into this plaque are far from ordinary. This plaque, erected in 1936, commemorates a grim chapter in Texas history, a chapter that unfolded right here in San Antonio.

In September of 1842, during the tumultuous years surrounding the Texan Revolution, a small company of 53 men under the command of Captain Nicholas Mosby Dawson found their way to the battlefield at Salado Creek. Dawson had joined Colonel Mathew Caldwell’s forces, who were defending San Antonio from a Mexican invasion led by General Adrián Woll.

As Caldwell’s men battled the Mexican forces at Salado Creek, Dawson’s company, mostly from Fayette County, pressed onward towards the battleground. Dawson, eager to assist his comrades, marched his company into the heart of danger, disregarding the threat posed by the Mexican cavalry and artillery.

They were ambushed. The Mexicans, anticipating Dawson’s arrival, surrounded the company, unleashing a deadly barrage of fire. Dawson, realizing the gravity of the situation, ordered a retreat, but it was too late. He was killed as his men desperately tried to defend themselves. 36 Texans died that day, 15 were taken prisoner, and only two escaped.

Dawson’s men faced unimaginable hardships. They were imprisoned in Perote, Mexico, where they endured squalid conditions and harsh treatment. Of the 15 men captured, only 9 survived to return home.

The Dawson Massacre stands as a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for Texas independence. It was a battle that was ultimately won by the Texans, but not without enormous cost. This plaque serves as a monument to their courage and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.

As you stand in front of this plaque, imagine the deafening sound of gunfire, the smoke billowing across the battlefield, and the courageous cries of the Texan soldiers who fell. It is a testament to the long and arduous journey towards Texas independence, a journey etched in sacrifice and bravery.
