The Davidwache wasn’t always this iconic building. It began in 1840 as a small guardhouse. Its location near the Reeperbahn meant it was always at the heart of the action. Even back then the amusement business was a bit shaky. The name Davidwache emerged in the 1840s but its origin remains a mystery. Only in 1970 did it officially adopt the name.
The building you see today is the result of Fritz Schumacher’s vision. He designed it in the style of an old Hamburg brick building. Completed in 1914 it features fascinating baroque elements. Look closely at the weatherproof legionnaire heads gazing down Davidstrasse. They’re a real eye-catcher. Richard Kuhl designed the striking ceramic decorations that adorn the exterior.
This isn’t just bricks and mortar. The Davidwache has a colourful past. It’s hosted numerous famous faces including Paul McCartney and Pete Best. They spent a night here once adding to the station’s legendary status. The Davidwache’s location on the Reeperbahn made it a popular setting for films and television series. It even starred in its own series Police Station Davidwache in the 1960s.
The Davidwache isn’t just a historic landmark. It’s still a functioning police station. About 150 officers patrol its small area. They deal with everything from illegal activities to the rowdy crowds that the Reeperbahn attracts. It’s a place where the order of law enforcement meets the vibrant chaos of St Pauli.
The Davidwache has undergone several renovations. The last major one took place in 2005. A 795 square metre extension was added. The building is now a protected landmark one of Hamburg’s most popular sights. It stands as a testament to the city’s complex history and its ongoing evolution.
