The David Keith Mansion and Carriage House were constructed between 1898 and 1900. Frederick Albert Hale, a renowned Utah architect, designed it. Hale also designed the Alta Club, the Salisbury Mansion, and the Salt Lake Public Library. The David Keith Mansion reflects the Neoclassical style with its colossal colonnades. David Keith made his fortune in Park City’s mining industry. He cooperated with Thomas Kearns and others. Together, they built the Silver King Coalition Mines Company. It extracted over ten million dollars in minerals between 1892 and 1907.
Step inside and imagine the octagonal-shaped room. It extends two stories high and is capped by a domed stained-glass window. This was a home built for lavish living. The David Keith Mansion reflects a style made possible by Park City’s mining boom.
David Keith’s influence extended beyond mining. He helped finance and publish the Salt Lake Tribune. He developed businesses and made charitable contributions. Keith, along with his wife and son, called this mansion home until 1916.
In 1916, the property was sold to Ezra Thompson. He was a former Mayor of Salt Lake. Thompson and his family resided here until 1939. From 1939 to 1968, H. Ross and Norinne Thompson Brown occupied the house.
David Keith was the youngest of fourteen children. He was born in Nova Scotia in 1847. Twenty years later, he sailed to California seeking his fortune. He later found success in Park City, Utah, in 1883.
Keith and Kearns became influential figures in Utah. Both men were members of Utah’s Constitutional Convention. David Keith died in 1918. His wife passed away soon after. Their son, David, inherited the business empire.
In 1971, the David Keith Mansion and Carriage House were added to the National Register of Historic Places. The David Keith Mansion stands as a reminder of Utah’s mining heritage.
