David Adamany Undergraduate Library

In 1982, a seed of an idea was planted in the mind of Wayne State University’s 8th president, David Adamany. He envisioned a library dedicated solely to undergraduates, a novel concept at the time. This seed would eventually blossom into the very building we stand before today, the David Adamany Undergraduate Library. The David Adamany Undergraduate Library opened its doors in September 1997. It stands as a testament to Adamany’s vision and the university’s commitment to undergraduate education. The library wasn’t an easy win. Adamany faced resistance to the idea. He saw the existing libraries were overcrowded and inadequate. He recognized the need for not just more space, but a specifically tailored space. After years of perseverance, ground was finally broken on February 2, 1996. A large crowd braved sub-zero temperatures to witness the beginning of this ambitious project. The David Adamany Undergraduate Library is more than just bookshelves and study carrels. It’s a bustling hub of activity, providing students with 2,337 seats, 27 group study rooms, and three instruction labs. Over 500 computer workstations offer access to a wealth of electronic resources. The library caters specifically to the learning needs of 1000 and 2000 level undergraduate courses. It houses a wide variety of books and magazines, including approximately 8,000 videos, DVDs, laser discs, and audiotapes in its media collection. For those burning the midnight oil, the DeRoy Extended Study Center provides 24-hour access. It is equipped with 140 standard workstations and 30 high-end workstations with specialized software. The David Adamany Undergraduate Library even offers information on careers, computers, and student survival skills. Beyond its practical resources, the David Adamany Undergraduate Library also boasts an impressive art collection. Nearly 6,000 works of art adorn the walls, enhancing the learning environment and celebrating artistic expression. These pieces embrace and reflect the everyday lives of people. They reinforce Wayne State University’s and Detroit’s standing as a center for art. The David Adamany Undergraduate Library isn’t just a place to study. It’s a place to connect, create, and explore.
