Why does this small triangle of land command such attention? This is D’Auria-Murphy Triangle. It’s more than just a green space. It’s a place filled with history and community spirit.

D’Auria-Murphy Triangle was created in 1918. It stands at the intersection of Crescent Avenue, East 183rd Street, Adams Place, and Arthur Avenue. The triangle is named for two local heroes. John D’Auria and Henry Murphy both lost their lives in World War I. They were young men from this very neighborhood.

Look around at the heart of D’Auria-Murphy Triangle. You’ll see a large marble bust of Christopher Columbus. This artwork was crafted around 1926 by Attilio Piccirilli. He was a famous Bronx-based sculptor. The statue wasn’t always here. It was originally in front of P.S. 45. In 1992, it was moved to D’Auria-Murphy Triangle.

Now glance across Arthur Avenue. You will notice St. Barnabas Hospital. It’s now known as SBH Health System. This hospital has its own interesting history. The land once belonged to Jacob Lorillard. He lived from 1774 to 1839. Lorillard’s family gave the land in 1874. It was donated to the Home for Incurables. Jacob’s mansion became a residence for doctors. Sadly it was torn down in 1932. In 1947, the Home for Incurables changed its name. It became St. Barnabas Hospital.

D’Auria-Murphy Triangle serves as the southern gateway to Arthur Avenue’s commercial area. The Prince Coffee Shop is across Crescent Avenue. It offers a sidewalk café. Mature street trees border it. This creates a transition to the lively Arthur Avenue.

In recent years, D’Auria-Murphy Triangle has faced some challenges. There was an incident of vandalism. Someone threw red paint on the Christopher Columbus statue. This happened on Columbus Day. A coalition formed to maintain the park. Bronx Community Board 6 joined local businesses and community groups. They aimed to look after the triangle. Volunteers planted flowers and repainted benches. They also sponsored Columbus Day and Veterans Day events.

The D’Auria-Murphy American Legion Post is nearby. It also played a role in the triangle’s history. The post was created in 1918 after World War I. Members wanted to name it after the Mayor of New York. But the mayor didn’t show up. So, they honored D’Auria and Murphy instead.

D’Auria-Murphy Triangle represents community. It embodies remembrance and resilience. It is a place where history and everyday life meet. Take a moment to appreciate this unique space. Remember the stories it holds.
