Let’s begin our journey at 227 Dauphine Street home to the Museum of Death. Its unassuming exterior belies a collection of artifacts exploring mortality murder suicide and executions. Some visitors report unsettling energy within.
Then we move to 415 Dauphine Street the Dauphine Orleans Hotel. A collection of buildings from different eras. The west side features cottages some dating back to 1775. One cottage the Audubon Cottage was a residence of the famed artist John James Audubon. Another cottage housed a notorious 19th-century brothel run by May Bailey. Today it’s May Bailey’s Place the hotel’s bar. Across the street stands a grand home built by merchant Samuel Hermann in 1834. Now part of the hotel its offices occupy the space. The Dauphine Orleans Hotel opened in 1971 after extensive renovations. Paranormal investigations reveal ghostly residents a soldier’s spirit near the pool and former ladies of the night.
Further down at 715 Dauphine Street stands the Gardette-LePretre House a private residence. Legend speaks of a deposed potentate who once resided here. Surrounded by guards a harem and servants the potentate transformed the house. Then one morning silence fell. Blood trickled from beneath the door. A massacre had occurred. While the legend is popular there’s no evidence to support it.
Finally we arrive at 1830 Dauphine Street the Dauphine House Bed & Breakfast. Located outside the French Quarter in Faubourg Marigny it’s still close enough for our tour. Built in 1860 the inn houses several spirits. The owner encountered a spectral couple on the stairs. They vanished after she acknowledged them. A distraught guest also encountered them feeling comforted by their presence.
