Interestingly, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians have a compelling story right here in San Antonio. This story is deeply intertwined with service, faith, and education. Founded in Mornese, Italy, by St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello on August 5, 1872, this religious family has grown into a global network. Today the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians include more than 11500 sisters in 96 countries.

The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians presence in the United States began in 1908. Four missionaries arrived in New Jersey bringing the Salesian charism. Their work in Texas started in 1934 and in California in 1950. The Western Province, with its Provincial House right here in San Antonio, was established in 1987. This division from the Eastern Province allowed for more focused ministry in the West.

The Salesian Sisters are dedicated to youth ministry. They focus on poor and marginalized young people. Their mission includes education and evangelization. This commitment is reflected in various programs. One notable initiative is the Fiat Project. This eight-month program supports young women in discerning God’s call. The goal is to help them understand their vocation. Whether it is consecrated life, marriage, or consecrated virginity each is lived in service.

Summer camps in California, Colorado, and Texas offer fun and faith-filled experiences. These camps provide a safe environment for youth aged five and older. Campers enjoy activities centered on faith, virtues, and friendships. For example St. John Bosco Camp in San Antonio includes arts and crafts, archery, sports, and prayer moments.

The Salesian Sisters also engage in parish ministries. They serve as Directors of Religious Education and Youth Ministers. They also work as CCD Teachers. Their presence extends to school ministries. Here the sisters serve as Principals, Teachers, and Administrators. They educate both the minds and hearts of the youth. This is done using the Preventive System of St. John Bosco.

The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians celebrated their 150th Anniversary in 2022. This milestone highlights their long-standing commitment. The Salesian Sisters Western Province continues its dedication. They are committed to educating youth, serving the poor, and assisting women at risk. They are spiritually strengthened by receiving the Sacraments. They trust in Mary’s motherly care. The Salesian Sisters’ work is rooted in the heart of Christ.

The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians stand as a testament to faith. Their dedication to service and education enriches our community. Their work embodies compassion and care for everyone they encounter. Here in San Antonio, their legacy continues to inspire.
