The Darßer Brücke is a rather ordinary-looking steel-concrete beam bridge. It carries the Darßer Straße over the Malchower Chaussee. The Malchower Chaussee is part of the Bundesstraße 2 a significant road. Built around 1985 it was initially inaccessible. Why? Because it lacked any road connections.
The story begins in the 1970s and 80s. The GDR sought to modernize Berlin’s road system. New housing developments on the city’s outskirts needed easy access to the city’s highways. The Malchower Chaussee was widened to four lanes. A new road linking Hohenschönhausen via Weißensee to the current A114 was planned. The Darßer Brücke was the first structure built. It stood alone a concrete giant with no roads leading to it.
It was an engineering marvel a testament to the GDR’s construction capabilities. But it was also a monument to a failure of planning. The planned road connections weren’t completed. The bridge is 85 meters long and 12.2 meters wide. Even today it is considered oversized for the traffic it carries. The bridge underwent a complete renovation between 1985 and 2006. This included waterproofing asphalt resurfacing concrete repairs and the redesign of the sidewalks and cycle paths.
