Journey back to 1648. Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor, moved his capital from Agra to Delhi. He renamed the city Shahjahanabad, known today as Old Delhi. Right outside the Red Fort, a bustling market emerged. It catered to the Mughal court and traders passing through. This market became an integral part of Chandi Chowk, the moonlit square designed by Shah Jahan’s daughter, Jahanara. Canals once flowed between the market stalls, reflecting the moonlight like silver. Within this vibrant marketplace lies Dariba Kalan, meaning “big unparalleled pearl”. Dariba Kalan became a hub for jewelers and metalsmiths. It was a testament to Shah Jahan’s passion for jewels. An Augustinian friar, Manrique, noted the emperor’s fascination with precious stones. He observed Shah Jahan captivated by jewels, barely glancing at dancing girls during a lavish banquet. Dariba Kalan was more than a market. It was a treasure trove of pearls, gemstones, and precious metals. It drew merchants and artisans from across Northern India. Even today, Dariba Kalan continues to be a prominent jewelry market in Old Delhi. While the quality may vary, the sheer volume of jewelry remains impressive. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Shah Jahan’s era.
