Is this the famed Dara Academy? The very school that began as a beacon of knowledge for girls? It is impressive! Dara Academy is no ordinary school. Founded in 1878 by Presbyterian missionaries, it was a pioneering institution. It aimed to provide girls with an education equal to that offered to boys in Buddhist temples. The school was initially called “Phra Racha Chaya Girls School.” It was later simplified to Dara Academy in 1923. For years, Dara Academy was an all-girls institution. It eventually transitioned into the coeducational school we see today, welcoming thousands of students. They come from pre-kindergarten to grade twelve. The academy holds a special place in the hearts of the Chiang Mai community. Dara Academy has even received royal visits! Their majesties King Prajadhipok and Queen Ramphaiphanni graced the academy with their presence. This goes to show the academy’s impactful legacy on education in Thailand. Dara Academy’s story is a testament to the enduring power of education and its ability to empower generations.
