Slipping through the bustling crowds near Avenue Moulay Youssef, have you ever wondered about the quiet sanctuaries nestled within Fes? Right here, before us, stands Dar Al Qoran, a place where the whispers of history intertwine with the melodies of devotion. Dar Al Qoran isn’t just a building; it’s a testament to Fes’s rich spiritual tapestry, a thread woven through centuries of scholarship and faith. While the Qarawiyyin University reigns as the oldest, Dar Al Qoran holds its own unique charm, a haven for those seeking solace and connection with the divine. Originally, Dar Al Qoran was a private residence, belonging to the renowned Fassi poet and scientist, Ibrahim Kharrat. Imagine, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this very spot resonated with Kharrat’s verses and intellectual pursuits. Then, a remarkable transformation occurred. Kharrat, a man of profound generosity, gifted his home to the community. He envisioned Dar Al Qoran as a mausoleum, a place of learning dedicated to the teachings of the Quran. This act of selfless devotion breathed new life into Dar Al Qoran, shaping its destiny as a spiritual center. The building, however, has faced its share of challenges. Time and the elements took their toll, leaving Dar Al Qoran in need of repair. Fortunately, a benefactor emerged. Hadj Khalifa Ben Ahmed Tarari Ferjani stepped forward during the French protectorate period, his generosity funding the restoration of Dar Al Qoran. But his contribution didn’t stop there. He saw an opportunity not just to rebuild, but to revitalize. New teaching methods were introduced, modern courses added, expanding the reach of Dar Al Qoran’s educational mission. More recently, in 1998, Dar Al Qoran underwent another significant restoration. This time, the Tunisian Ministry of Religious Affairs spearheaded the project, ensuring that Dar Al Qoran would continue to serve as a beacon of knowledge and faith. The restoration culminated in its reopening to the public in 2000, welcoming visitors to experience its renewed splendor. As you stand before Dar Al Qoran today, take a moment to appreciate its enduring legacy. From a private residence to a vibrant center of Quranic study, its journey reflects the resilience and unwavering spirit of Fes.
