Is it possible that Guangzhou, a city teeming with modern life, also shelters ancient Taoist secrets? Daojiao whispers tales of gods and immortals. It is a native religion that has shaped Guangzhou for centuries.

Guangzhou boasts a rich religious history. Taoism stands out as its only native faith. The story of Taoism in Guangzhou begins long ago. Buddhism arrived first in 255 A.D. Taoism followed in 306 A.D. Islamism came during the Tang Dynasty. Catholicism appeared in the late Ming Dynasty. Christianity arrived in the early Qing Dynasty.

Let’s talk about Sanyuan Daoist Temple. It is Guangzhou’s largest and oldest Daoist structure. Its history stretches back over 1600 years. Imagine this temple in 319 A.D. It was first named Yuegang Yuan. Baogu practiced Taoism here. She was the daughter of Nanhai Governor Baoliang. Because of its location, people called it “North Temple”.

In 1643, it was renamed Sanyuan Temple. This honored the three divine officials of the sky, earth, and water. In 1700, the temple expanded greatly. It became a famous Daoist site in Lingnan. Renovations occurred during the reigns of Emperors Qianlong, Tongzhi, and Guangxu.

The anti-Japanese War caused severe damage to the Sanyuan Temple. Abbot He Chengrui raised funds for repairs soon after. Unfortunately, the Cultural Revolution ruined the temple again. In 1982, the Guangzhou Daoist circle began another renovation. Today, the temple has nearly 100 Daoist structures. Its layout is unique among Guangzhou’s ancient buildings.

Sanyuan Temple is now a holiday resort and a famous Daoist temple. Pilgrims and tourists visit constantly. It also serves as the office of the Guangzhou Daoist Association. You can find it at No. 11 Yinyuan Lu.

Consider the Temple of the Five Immortals. It was once a Taoist temple. Legend says five immortals rode five colored sheep into Guangzhou. They bore the five grains. This gave Guangzhou its nickname “City of the Rams”. The immortals introduced rice farming. They became protectors of the yearly harvest. The sheep turned to stone.

The present Temple of the Five Immortals was built under the Ming Dynasty around 1377. In 1378, a large bell was installed. A plague broke out. The bell became known as the “Forbidden Bell”. It has not been rung since. Today, the temple no longer operates as a Taoist temple.

Finally, let’s not forget Wong Tai Sin Temple. It attracts tourists. It honors the deity Wong Tai Sin. Wong Tai Sin is known for healing. The Guangzhou Wong Tai Sin Temple was established in 1899. It was reconstructed in 1997 and opened to the public in 1999.

These temples highlight Daojiao’s long-lasting impact. Daojiao is an integral part of Guangzhou’s cultural and historical identity. As we leave, remember the echoes of ancient beliefs. May the wisdom of Daojiao continue to inspire.
