Wondering why the Danziger Bridge is more than just a way to cross the Industrial Canal? This bridge carries U.S. Route 90, also known as Chef Menteur Highway, connecting parts of New Orleans. The Danziger Bridge stands as a testament to both engineering and the complexities of history.
Let’s step back to the early days. The original Danziger Bridge, a draw bridge, was built in 1931 and 1932. As New Orleans grew, a new bridge was needed to handle more traffic. Construction on the current Danziger Bridge began in 1983. It opened in February 1988. The Danziger Bridge became the widest lift bridge in the world. Most boats can pass underneath without the bridge needing to lift.
The Danziger Bridge is named after Alfred Danziger. He was a prominent New Orleans lawyer. Danziger served as the personal attorney for Governor Huey Long. He was also assistant attorney general in 1934. From 1936 to 1946, he served as executive counsel for Mayor Robert Maestri. Alfred Danziger significantly contributed to Dillard University. This historically Black university was founded in 1930.
However, the Danziger Bridge is also known for a tragic event. In 2005, it was the site of the Danziger Bridge shootings. This event occurred six days after Hurricane Katrina. Members of the New Orleans Police Department killed two unarmed African American civilians. Four other civilians were wounded. The victims were 17-year-old James Brissette and 40-year-old Ronald Madison. Ronald Madison was mentally disabled. The police attempted to cover up the shootings. They falsely claimed that the officers were fired upon.
In 2011, five NOPD officers were convicted of charges related to the cover-up. The convictions were vacated in 2013 due to prosecutorial misconduct. In 2016, the former officers pleaded guilty to reduced charges. They received sentences ranging from three to twelve years.
The city of New Orleans reached a settlement with the families of the victims in 2016. The settlement totaled $13.3 million. Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued an apology to the families. This apology was rare for a city leader in a case of police brutality.
The Danziger Bridge stands as a symbol of progress and a reminder of past injustices. As you cross the Danziger Bridge, remember its history. It is a story of engineering innovation and a call for justice and equality.
