Did you know a Littleton resident became a Navy SEAL? Right here stands the Danny Dietz Memorial Statue. It honors a local hero. This bronze sculpture commemorates Petty Officer 2nd Class Danny Phillip Dietz Jr. He was a United States Navy SEAL.
Danny grew up nearby. He attended Centennial and Goddard Schools. Dietz graduated from Heritage High School in 1999. He fulfilled his dream. He survived the toughest 44-week military training.
Look closely at the statue’s base. It notes Danny’s Littleton roots. The sculpture is based on one of his last photos.
Danny received the Navy Cross. This recognized extraordinary heroism in Afghanistan in 2005. He fought valiantly. He defended his team against a larger enemy force. Dietz was mortally wounded.
The Danny Dietz Memorial means a lot to this community. In August 2006, Littleton partnered with the Dietz family. They planned to honor Danny’s sacrifice. A committee formed. It included city officials and Danny’s parents.
A section of Littleton Boulevard became Danny Dietz Drive. The dedication was September 18, 2006. The memorial committee chose Berry Park for a lasting landmark. It was near Danny’s neighborhood and schools.
Robert Henderson of Canon City created the bronze sculpture. The City Council approved the contract. This included the design and location.
Some people raised concerns. They questioned showing Dietz with his rifle. Especially near a school. The Dietz family addressed these objections. The city reaffirmed the project.
The city hosted the dedication ceremony on July 4, 2007. The Danny Dietz Memorial stands as a tribute. It honors service and sacrifice.
