“A high school named after a journalist?” Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, right here in Lake Balboa, is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the power of words and a beacon of hope named after Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. He was an alumnus of Birmingham High School, which shares a unique history with DPMHS. Daniel Pearl Magnet High School began as a program within Birmingham High School in 1995. In 2007, it was renamed to honor Daniel Pearl. Then in 2009, Pearl Magnet became a separate entity. This was due to Birmingham High School’s transition to an independent charter school. The split wasn’t easy. The first year was turbulent, with some students leaving due to conflicts with Birmingham staff and students. Others departed, longing for a larger high school experience. Despite the challenges, Daniel Pearl Magnet High School persevered. The school even moved into what used to be a special education center next to Birmingham in 2010. These buildings have an even deeper past. They are the last remnants of Birmingham General Hospital. Imagine the stories these walls could tell. From healing soldiers to nurturing young minds. This small school, with its intimate class sizes and dedicated faculty, boasts impressive achievements. In Spring 2011, a remarkable 94% of tenth graders passed the CAHSEE on their first try. Their graduation rate consistently soars above the LAUSD average. In 2011, it was at 80% compared to the district average of 56%. Daniel Pearl Magnet High School isn’t just about academics. It’s a vibrant community. For a time, they even had a house system. Students were sorted into houses named after prominent journalists. They competed for the House Cup, earning points for achievements and losing them for infractions. While the house system is no more, the spirit of friendly competition and recognition lives on. The school’s dedication to journalism shines through its award-winning student newspaper, The Pearl Post. In 2016, it was named High School Newspaper of the Year by the Los Angeles Press Club. They even faced a censorship battle in 2021, upholding the principles of journalistic integrity. Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, small but mighty, continues to inspire and educate future generations of journalists and communicators.
