“Azaleas… so many azaleas!” a child exclaimed, his voice echoing through Dangsan-dong 2-ga. Dangsan-dong 2-ga, a neighborhood in Seoul’s Yeongdeungpo District, was once renowned for the profusion of azalea blossoms that painted the landscape each spring. The name, Dangsan-dong, is believed to originate from these vibrant blooms. Another theory connects the name to Dansan (단산), a mountain at Dangsan-dong 110 where military ceremonies, known as Dangje (당제), were conducted. In 1936, Dangsan-dong, along with Yangpyeong and Yanghwajeonghoe, fell under the jurisdiction of Gyeongseong-bu. By 1941, Dangsan 1-dong became its own entity, separate from Yangpyeong and Yanghwajeong. Later, in 1948, Dangsan 1-dong and Jungdong 2-dong were reorganized into three districts. The neighborhood system, implemented in 1955, further divided these areas into Dangsan 1 through 4-dong. Dangsan-dong 2-ga’s population has steadily grown over the years. The population reached 31,799 in 2005, then increased to 32,616 in 2010. By 2015, the population had risen to 34,487, and in 2020, it reached 35,966. Imagine the vibrant tapestry of lives interwoven within this dynamic neighborhood. Dangsan-dong 2-ga stands as a testament to the passage of time, its name a whisper of blooming azaleas and ancient ceremonies.
