Azaleas bloom in Dangsan 2-dong. They paint the neighborhood with vibrant hues. Dangsan 2-dong is a neighborhood in the Yeongdeungpo District of Seoul. It’s one of two administrative districts within the larger Dangsan-dong. The name “Dangsan-dong” itself has a couple of possible origins. One theory connects it to the beautiful azaleas that once flourished here. “Dansan” might derive from “Dangje,” ceremonies held at a military camp located at Dangsan-dong 110. This camp was situated near a mountain known as ‘Dansan.’ Dangsan 2-dong and its sister district, Dangsan 1-dong, have a fascinating history. Originally, this area, along with Yangpyeong and Yanghwajeonghoe, fell under the jurisdiction of Gyeongseong-bu in 1936. Later, in 1941, Dangsan 1-dong became a separate entity. Further administrative divisions occurred in 1948 and 1955. By 1955, the original area had been subdivided into Dangsan 1 through 4-dong. This reflects the evolving urban landscape of Seoul.
