Lost in the bustling streets of Velachery you find yourself before the Dandhesswaram Temple. Its ancient stones whisper tales of Pallava and Chola reigns. This is not just a temple it’s a living testament to faith and history.
The Dandhesswaram Temple a Shiva temple stands proudly. Its origins trace back to the Pallava dynasty. Later the Cholas repaired and rebuilt it. The main deity is Dhandeeswarar a form of Shiva. His consort is Goddess Karunambika. The temple complex includes a main shrine and a sacred tank known as Yama Theertham.
Legend speaks of Lord Yama the god of death. He installed the lingam here seeking forgiveness from Shiva. He had been kicked on the chest by Shiva earlier in Thirukadavur. Yama prayed for strength to continue his duties. Shiva granted him a staff restoring his power. This act gave the temple its name Dandhesswaram. Bestower of the mythical staff.
Another story connects the four Vedas to this sacred place. They had been hidden by Hiranyaksha under the sea. The Vedas came here to regain their lost strength. They prayed to Lord Dhandeeswarar. Their prayers were answered. This is why many believe the temple restores strength and vitality. The name Velachery itself may be a corruption of Veda Shreni a place of Vedas.
The temple’s architecture is Dravidian. It boasts a five-tiered vimana. There are separate shrines for Ganapati Subrahmanya and Shasta. Idols of Lord Surya Bhairavar and 63 Nayanmars also reside within. Sadly some parts show signs of neglect. Broken pillars and remnants of carvings are scattered around. The pillars bear Tamil and Devnagri inscriptions. Recently however the temple has seen increased patronage.
It’s said that on the Tamil New Year the sun’s rays fell directly on the lingam. High rises now obstruct this phenomenon. Daily poojas start at 6 30 am and continue until 11 30 am. The temple reopens from 4 pm to 8 30 pm. The temple’s niches hold images of a kneeling man and woman. This unique feature is also found in other temples in Tamil Nadu. The Dandhesswaram Temple remains a vibrant center of faith a beacon of history and a testament to the enduring power of devotion. Step inside and feel the weight of its ages.
