Let’s step back in time, almost a century, to 1908. The Dampfschlepper “Saturn” was built in Hamburg. Built for the Wulff brothers, it was a relatively small but typical harbor tugboat of the time, crucial for maneuvering ships in and out of the busy port. The “Saturn” is a powerful example of this. It moved ships with the might of a steam engine, churning out 140 horsepower. A steam engine that was once the heart of the “Saturn” was replaced in 1957 with a more modern boiler from the VEB Dampfkesselbau Dresden-Übigau. The name “Saturn” is still etched on its side, a reminder of a bygone era when Rostock’s port throbbed with the rhythmic pulse of steam-powered ships. Today, you stand before this magnificent vessel, now part of the Rostock maritime museum, its steam-powered engine lying silent, its journey through time captured in the patina of its steel hull. Take a moment to picture busy dockworkers connecting the “Saturn” to long, thick ropes, pulling and guiding ships, a symphony of clanging gears and billowing smoke in the backdrop. But more importantly, remember that this was the last remaining, fully riveted steam tugboat in the world, a treasure of maritime history. Today, its story lives on, not in the roar of the boiler but in the whispers of time echoing through its metal skeleton, a silent tribute to the history of its power and purpose.
