From the ashes of war, a resilient iron horse emerged. This, my friends, is the Dampflok 50 3707-2. It stands as a testament to German engineering and a symbol of a bygone era. The Dampflok 50 3707-2 began its life in 1940 as the 50 624, built by Henschel in Kassel. Originally designed as a freight train locomotive, the class 50, including our Dampflok 50 3707-2, was known for its flexibility, fuel efficiency, and popularity with the crews. After World War II, this locomotive, along with 349 others of the same class, remained in East Germany, serving the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR). In the 1960s, the Dampflok 50 3707-2 underwent a significant modernization. It received a new boiler and, possibly, a new tender. The transformation also included a new number, changing from 50 624 to 50 3707, later becoming 50 3707-2 in 1970. The Dampflok 50 3707-2 continued its service until the early 1980s. Even after its retirement from active duty, it continued to serve a purpose, working as a heating locomotive. After German reunification, the Dampflok 50 3707-2 found new life. It was initially purchased by railway enthusiasts in Halberstadt. Today, it resides here in Berlin’s Natur Park Südgelände. It is a beloved landmark and a popular attraction alongside the park’s historic water tower. Interestingly, during a 1989 refurbishment, the Dampflok 50 3707-2 received the frame of another locomotive, the 50 3708. Technically, this makes our locomotive a bit of a hybrid. It carries the number 50 3707-2, but its frame tells a different story. The Dampflok 50 3707-2 is more than just a rusting hulk of metal. It embodies a journey through time. It whispers stories of wartime service, post-war reconstruction, and the dedication of those who kept the trains running. It is a tribute to German resilience.
