Imagine, a ship slicing through ice. It is a ship that embodies strength and history. That ship is the Dampfeisbrecher Stettin.

The Dampfeisbrecher Stettin is more than a ship. It is a floating museum, a testament to maritime engineering and a symbol of resilience. Built in 1933, this vessel was once the largest icebreaker under the German flag.

Commissioned by the Szczecin Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Dampfeisbrecher Stettin was crucial for maintaining winter navigation. The Oder River and Szczecin Lagoon often froze before Christmas. Without icebreakers, shipping would have been impossible.

From 1935, the Dampfeisbrecher Stettin served between Stettin and Swinemünde, breaking ice on the Baltic Sea. In March 1945, it played a heroic role. The ship helped 500 war refugees escape to Copenhagen.

After the war, the Dampfeisbrecher Stettin found a new home in Hamburg. It was managed by the Wasser- und Schifffahrtsdirektion Hamburg. The ship operated in the Unterelbe, the Kiel Canal and Kiel Bay until 1981.

Facing scrapping due to economic reasons, the Dampfeisbrecher Stettin was saved by dedicated sponsors. The Dampf-Eisbrecher STETTIN e.V. was founded to preserve this technical cultural monument. Today, thanks to the association, the Dampfeisbrecher Stettin is still seaworthy.

The Dampfeisbrecher Stettin’s design is unique. Its bulbous hull allowed it to withstand immense pressure from thick ice. The ship could free itself by swinging sideways. A 2000 hp engine powers its propeller. The three-cylinder expansion piston steam engine rotates at 120 revolutions per minute. This generates the force needed to break through pack ice.

A visit to the Dampfeisbrecher Stettin offers a glimpse into the past. Explore the fully functional engine room. See the bridge, the captain’s workplace. The technology evokes an earlier era.

The Dampfeisbrecher Stettin is usually docked in the museum harbor Oevelgönne. When not sailing, it welcomes visitors. The admission fee is affordable. It costs 3 for adults and 1.50 for children.

The Dampfeisbrecher Stettin carries the status of a technical cultural monument. In summer, it takes guests on trips along the Elbe. It reminds us of Stettin’s maritime importance. The ship symbolizes hope and perseverance. The Dampfeisbrecher Stettin is a testament to the past, present and future.
