Situated within the Innerstaden district, Dammfri is bordered by John Ericssons väg to the east and Köpenhamnsvägen to the west. This area, friends, holds a captivating story waiting to be unveiled. Dammfri’s history can be traced back to the mid-19th century, with the construction of a grand villa. This villa, named Dammfrigården, became the namesake for the entire neighbourhood. Built in the late 1850s by a wealthy merchant named Nils Söderberg, Dammfrigården was intended as a peaceful sanctuary for his ailing wife, Anna Christina. Sadly, she passed away in 1859, leading Nils to sell the property. Over the years, Dammfrigården witnessed a series of owners until its acquisition by the City of Malmö in 1915. Transformed into two apartments, it provided shelter for families for decades. By the 1970s, the once-grand villa had fallen into disrepair, finding new life as a meeting place for the Gripen Scout Troop. In 1980, Dammfrigården was demolished to pave the way for a senior living facility, but its legacy lives on in the neighbourhood’s name. The origin of the name “Dammfri” itself is a source of much debate among local historians. Some speculate that it alludes to the neighbourhood’s secluded location “free from the city’s dust”. However, records from 1865 reveal the name was originally spelled “Damfred.” This suggests a connection to an earlier name, “Daniifred,” potentially inspired by Johan Danius, one of the villa’s early owners.
