Dalkey Quarry was tasked with supplying granite for a massive project: the construction of Dún Laoghaire Harbour. They loaded the stone onto a light railway that connected the quarry to the harbor, a testament to the scale of the operation. Dalkey granite, known for its iron-like strength, was also used to build the South Bull Wall, a vital part of Dublin Harbour’s defenses. Even the streets of Dublin felt the impact of Dalkey Quarry. The granite was used as flagstone, paving the way for countless footsteps throughout history. The quarry’s legacy extends beyond Dublin. In the 1840s, Bishop Michael Fleming, recognizing the quality of the stone, arranged for its transportation to Newfoundland. Dalkey granite now forms part of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s, a lasting reminder of the quarry’s reach. Today, Dalkey Quarry stands silent.
