Dalang Cultural Park wasn’t always here. The area was designed by EC3. They collaborated with SCUT the Design Institute of South China University of Technology. Their vision was to create a lush urban campus. A space that blended seamlessly with the surrounding environment. This involved connecting the urban fabric to a nearby forest park and the green hills beyond. They achieved this by creating dynamic spatial relationships. This allowed for a strong civic and cultural character. The design promotes social interaction and discovery.
The park itself is a 14.5-acre site. It is located about 10 miles north of Shenzhen’s central business district. The park is strategically divided. The division is made by a north-south boulevard. This design maximizes accessibility. You can reach the park from the main boulevard a metro line and several smaller streets. It’s a peaceful respite. It provides a welcome contrast to Shenzhen’s busy urban setting.
The two million square feet of space are cleverly divided. They are distributed across the site to animate street-level activity. This ensures interconnectivity between different programs. The design creates Programmatic Anchors. These are exterior focal points. They highlight the community-focused development. The design also includes Programming Connectors. These are interior spaces. They are designed to promote interaction and synergy among visitors.
The Grand Reading Room and the Event Space at the Cultural Centre are housed in glass-enclosed Lanterns. These lanterns amplify the architectural identity. They also offer magnificent views of the city and landscape. The Dalang Cultural and Sports Centre is a unique blend of public and private development. It draws inspiration from traditional Chinese landscape painting. The design beautifully incorporates solid and void opaque and transparent compositions. It achieves an ephemeral character expressing Chinese values of balance and duality in a modern context. This is a place where history and modernity meet. It is a space for relaxation contemplation and community engagement. A perfect example of Shenzhen’s dynamic spirit.
