A thousand years of history whisper from these stones. Welcome to Castello Dal Pozzo. This magnificent castle overlooking Lake Maggiore boasts a history as rich and layered as its architectural styles. Originally built as a fortress by the Visconti family around the year 1000 it stands on the site of a Roman Castrum occupied by the 5th Legion.
Imagine the Visconti family their ambition burning to rule Milan. They launched their campaign for power from this very spot succeeding in 1277. This strategic location saw its share of battles sieges and fires. The castle suffered partial destruction over the centuries.
Fast forward to the mid-18th century. The Visconti family now called Aragona following a royal concession rebuilt the ruined castle as a residence. A dramatic twist involved Marquis Alberto Visconti d’Aragona. His participation in the Carbonari uprisings led to a death sentence and the confiscation of his property.
His sister married Bonifazio dal Pozzo d’Annone from Piedmont. Their son Claudio a passionate art and architecture lover particularly enamored with the Gothic Revival style transformed the castle. He employed English architect Richard Poppelwell Pullan to create the Victorian neo-Gothic masterpiece we see today.
The Dal Pozzo family has inhabited Castello Dal Pozzo for six generations. They expanded the resort incorporating old stables and farmhouses. In the 18th-century Palazzo within the complex Alberto the last Visconti d’Aragona lived his final years after a pardon. The Palazzo later became a refuge for local families during both World Wars. It even served briefly as a school before its recent renovation and opening to the public in 2010.
