Whispers of ancient wisdom. This is Dajue Temple. Feel the weight of history here. Built in 1068 during the Liao Dynasty it was originally called Qingshui Courtyard. This temple is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to centuries of faith perseverance and cultural exchange.

Dajue Temple nestled at the foot of Yangtai Mountain holds a unique place in Beijing’s landscape. Unlike most traditional Chinese temples oriented south-north Dajue Temple faces east. This reflects the Liao people’s sun worship. The rising sun symbolized new beginnings and their reverence for its power.

Within the temple’s walls are treasures. The Hall of Sakyamuni houses a magnificent statue of the Buddha. Above it hangs a horizontal inscribed board bearing the words “Wu Qu Lai Chu”. This means the Buddhist essence is everywhere. Emperor Qianlong himself wrote these words. The Hall of Amitabha is equally impressive with statues of Amitabha Sakyamuni and Medicine Guru Buddha. Behind them stand three Bodhisattvas representing wisdom mercy and truth.

But Dajue Temple is more than just halls and statues. It’s a garden of living history. A giant magnolia tree over 300 years old stands tall. It’s said to have been transplanted from Sichuan. Its blossoms in April are a breathtaking spectacle. Two ancient ginkgo trees stand sentinel. One over 900 years old is known as the “King of Ginkgoes”. It takes seven or eight adults to encircle its trunk. Its golden leaves in autumn paint the grounds in spectacular hues.

The temple’s story is rich with tales of emperors and abbots. Legend tells of Emperor Qianlong. He allegedly took abbot Shanhua as his teacher ordaining for 49 days in the temple’s south courtyard. Some believe this act paved the way for the prosperous Kang-Qian era.

Dajue Temple has endured wars and destruction. It was rebuilt and renamed several times. In 1992 it reopened to the public. In 2006 it was officially designated an important cultural relic. Today Dajue Temple stands as a symbol of resilience a beacon of faith and a window into China’s rich and complex past. Let its serene atmosphere inspire you. Let its history captivate your soul. This is more than just a temple. This is Dajue Temple.
