Gazing over the vast expanse of Dajiang Reservoir, can you sense the echoes of its past? This reservoir, cradled between Henan and Hubei provinces, has a story etched not just in water, but in human lives and geological shifts. Dajiang Reservoir wasn’t always this vast. Originally created in 1958 by the Danjiangkou Dam, it was already impressive. It held the title of China’s largest reservoir and ranked third largest in all of Asia. Yet, the story of Dajiang Reservoir doesn’t end there. This crucial water source plays multiple roles. It supplies water to the region and irrigates the surrounding lands. It generates electricity and controls floods. It even supports aquaculture, contributing to the local economy. The creation of this reservoir wasn’t without sacrifice. In its initial stages, a staggering 160,000 residents were relocated to make way for its rising waters. Imagine their lives uprooted, a city submerged. Among the lost was the ancient city of Junzhou, its history now resting beneath the surface. The reservoir’s growth has been marked by both human endeavor and natural consequence. Between 1970 and 1973, as the reservoir filled, the earth itself responded with tremors, some reaching a magnitude of 4.7. These reservoir-induced earthquakes ceased once the water level stabilized. Years later, between 2005 and 2009, the dam underwent a significant heightening. This was part of the ambitious South-North Water Transfer Project. This expansion, while beneficial, resulted in another wave of relocation, displacing over 345,000 people. The rising waters brought a new depth, literally, to Dajiang Reservoir. The water level rose from 157 meters to 170 meters. The surface area expanded from 700 to 1,000 square kilometers. The storage capacity surged from 17.45 billion cubic meters to a staggering 29.05 billion. Today, Dajiang Reservoir thrives. Efforts to combat overfishing have rejuvenated the local ecosystem. The waters now teem with a resurgent population of black carp, Xenocypris fish, Chinese perch, and yellow catfish. Wild ducks and egrets grace the skies above, while otters playfully navigate the waters. Dajiang Reservoir stands as a testament to human ambition and nature’s resilience. It’s a vital resource, a place of sacrifice, and a stage for nature’s recovery. As you look out at its tranquil surface, remember the stories it holds.
