“Did anyone bring their hiking boots?” Daisy Hill, a suburb of Logan City, has a history intertwined with nature. It’s located just 22 km southeast of Brisbane’s heart. Today, we’re at the edge of the magnificent Daisy Hill Conservation Park, formerly known as Daisy Hill State Forest.

The story of Daisy Hill begins in 1870 with James and Mary Ann Dennis. They were among the area’s first European settlers. The name “Daisy Hill” is a charming tribute to the abundance of Olearia nernstii flowers that once blanketed the hillside. Imagine the sight!

The Dennis family established deep roots here. Their homestead, “Dennisvale,” and a family cemetery, still stand as testament to their legacy. In those early days, Daisy Hill State Forest provided valuable resources. The timber was used to build houses, bridges, and even the tramways of Brisbane.

The forest wasn’t just for timber though. It was also home to Aboriginal communities who lived in harmony with nature. Local stories tell of controlled burns to encourage wallaby populations and gatherings where sweet potatoes were shared around a communal fire. These traditions highlight the deep connection between the land and its people.

Daisy Hill Conservation Park, a sanctuary of history and nature, welcomes us today. As we explore its trails, let’s remember the Dennis family and the Aboriginal people who walked this land before us. Their stories remind us of the importance of preserving this beautiful place for generations to come.
