Did the stars whisper secrets to ancient emperors? Let’s uncover the story at the Daishogun Shrine. This shrine, nestled in Kyoto’s Kamigyo-ku, isn’t your typical Shinto shrine. It began not as a place for traditional deities, but for a unique entity: the “Daishogun.” Emperor Kanmu, upon establishing Heian-kyo (Kyoto) in 794, ordered the construction of the “Daishogun-do” within the Imperial Palace grounds. This structure, based on Onmyodo principles, aimed to ward off evil influences believed to emanate from the northwest. Originally an Onmyodo temple, the Daishogun-do eventually transformed into the Daishogun Shrine we see today. The enshrined deity, Daishogun, was a star god, a protector against directional calamities. Over time, the enshrined figures expanded. After the Meiji era’s Shinbutsu Bunri law (separating Shinto and Buddhism), deities like Susanoo-no-Mikoto, his children, and even Emperors Shoumu and Kanmu joined the Daishogun. The Daishogun Shrine’s importance is documented in historical texts. The “Sankaiki” diary from 1178 mentions the shrine as one of many visited for prayers. Another text, the “Meitokuki”, describes samurai gathering before the shrine’s torii gate. The shrine houses over 100 deity statues, 80 of which are designated Important Cultural Assets. These statues, housed in the Hotoku-den treasure hall, form a 3D star mandala, a testament to the unique celestial focus of this shrine. The Daishogun Shrine offers a glimpse into a fascinating blend of Onmyodo beliefs, star worship, and Shinto traditions, all woven into the rich tapestry of Kyoto’s history. Visiting during its limited opening days (May 1st-5th and November 1st-5th) provides a unique experience. You can explore the Hotoku-den and connect with the history and energy of this special place.
